A Little About Me

Some Background

Hi! My name is Alice. I grew up in a two-hundred year old house that our family fixed up from top to bottom.Of course, working on an old house can be a expensive proposition, so we all learned to do as much of the work ourselves as we could. We learned to sheetrock, paint and wallpaper; not to mention all the new electric, plumbing and heating. (This now helps me to fix up my own home, which is an old cape built in 1925, and needs a lot of TLC.) In the midst of making a home, the desire for soft, pretty things prompted my mother, sister, and I to learn how to sew, knit and crochet. I started making my own dolls at about eight years old, and developed a lifelong love for the needlearts. In recent years, this has come to include quilting. I am a member of the Heritage Quilter's Guild associated with the Greater Hartford Quilt Guild in Connecticut. As a Guild, we are very involved in community activities, helping charities and teaching the art and craft of quilting. My creativity had a practical beginning, but it taught me to appreciate that the beautiful things in life can be "handmade" and "homemade". Even now it has a practical value as a home business called Pumpkins & Roses. This allows me to stay home with my children, who are homeschooled, and it gives my love of handwork a useful outlet. If you homeschool too, I'd love to hear from you. Also, try some of my homeschool links.

Music Interests

If you have visited the Quilting Gallery, you know that I have been involved in music lessons for my daughter and also, beginning January of 1997, for myself. I am the proud owner of an old beat-up cello. It is a three-quarter size "Kay", with the unusual feature of machine heads for tuning. I love the sound and sometimes I just sit and idly bow or pluck the strings just to hear it. Mostly I have to stay on my toes and practice hard for I have been mightily challenged to participate in the so-called "childrens' orchestra" and keep up with the work. They are really doing some great work and do not sound like your typical childrens' group- indeed these young musicians have been in the news several times for their accomplishments. It is so rewarding to be able to contribute to and perform in these groups as an interested Mom and so-called coach/assistant/go-fer.

This is a Stradivarius Cello

Pssst! This is not my cello, but it's gorgeous isn't it?

Other Interests

Among my other interests are reading, gardening, collecting small, old, china teapots, doing some decorative painting and learning something new and challenging every year; like learning HTML. I believe it's what keeps me young (not that I'm saying I'm old yet!) And most important to me, is my faith as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. By our study of the Bible, we learn to live happy satisfying lives now, while waiting for God's New System to come upon this Earth and make it into the Paradise we pray for in the Lord's Prayer. If you would like to become aquainted with what the Bible teaches about this, visit the Official Website of Jehovah's Witnesses, or even better, speak to the next Witness who visits you at your home. It won't take long to learn about God's Promises, but the rewards will last forever.
